Movement is somatic when we consciously focus on the internal experience of movement as opposed to it’s visual appearance or aestheticism. It is typically characterised by slow, intentional, exploratory or repetitive movements.
Somatic movement sessions are personalised and tailored to your specific needs. The classes can be considered a mindful movement practice or can be used as an opportunity to seek guidance and intuition from your body in relation to a specific topic. This can be a great complement to your 1-1 coaching sessions or a useful standalone session when in need of rejuvenation and reconnection.
My methodology has been heavily informed by my extensive experience of teaching inclusive dance across London. I worked at both Icandance and SLIDE. As a producer for DanceWest, I launched the Bolder Not Older Dance company (supporting those aged 55+) and Mum’s Movement; an initiative which helped new mothers reconnect with their bodies post-birth. As a certified yoga teacher and dancer, I initially curated my signature class, Soma Flow, to support dancers in adopting a holistic, mindful and intuitive approach to their movement practice. It was a brilliant way to ease back in after an injury, overcome psychological roadblocks and elevate physical and artistic performance.
Soma Flow centres on the principles of somatic movement and is designed and delivered in a trauma-informed way. It has proven especially transformative for those who experience anxiety, overwhelm, chronic pain, inflammation or stress. Soma Flow combines breathwork, meditation, yin yoga and embodiment exercises to offer a nourishing and restorative practice.
If you are looking for a slow-flowing movement session to gently energise or rejuvenate yourself; this is the perfect option. I view this as a safe space where you are gently guided by your inner curiosity and creativity in responding to your body's needs. Together we develop a practice which is experiential, body-led and intuitive.
